Obligatory Christmas Recap

Headed up to Chicago to watch a Christmas play with some friends..... Oh what was it called?  Something about the Secrets of Jonathan Toomey?  Ring a bell with anyone?  No matter, it was a cute play.  And someone came VERY prepared for any toll roads we might encounter:)

Singing Christmas carols on the street corner by the restaurant we ate at while waiting for our table to be ready- might have been my favorite part of the night!  Well, that and the cupcake shop we went to right before closing.  She gave us some cupcakes for free since she was just going to have to throw them out!  And they were goooooooooood cupcakes.

Supper out with Erin and Lisa- usually we end up at Olive Garden but we changed it up a bit and did Chili's this time.  Judging by the reaction one of our stomach's had to the food, we might be back at Olive Garden next time!  But we had a great time as always, catching up on life and laughing together- a lot.

A Caroling Extravaganza!!!  Where some bedazzled themselves in Christmas attire and some did not, but a good time was had by all anyway:)

I don't have any pictures to show for big family gatherings this year, just our little one.  I always love the shot of grandpa reading the Christmas story to his girlies.

A regular stocking would not do this year as mom decided to make blankets for the girls.  They thought these giant ones were pretty cool!  And they loved the blankets that came with them.

Not a ton of pictures, not a real detailed recap, but a recap nonetheless.  We are blessed indeed.

Sunday School Disaster

Yesterday in Sunday School I planned to have a birthday party for Jesus with my 3 year olds.  My mom had made cakes for the nursing home and had one left over so I frosted it asked mom to frost it for me (she even added colorful sprinkles) and took it to church.  I was feeling so organized for once.  I had everything I needed all in one bag that I could carry in with me, rather than a stack of things flying everywhere like I normally do.  Plates, spoons, knife, candles, little presents for the kiddos..... I was set.  We had our story and did our paper, then we lit the candles.  And then sparks started flying off the candles.  I accidentally grabbed trick candles!!  All but one of my kids freaked out, one of them so bad that she went back upstairs to her parents!  The others calmed down pretty quick.  All I could do was laugh.  If you've ever had trick candles, there's nothing you can do except keep trying to blow them out until they die.  I would blow one out then lick my fingers and touch the wick to try and get it to stop.  Over and over and over again.  Thankfully one of my kiddos had brought his grandma to visit for the day so she helped with the crying children and went to the bathroom to get wet paper towels for me.  We doused the candles and that was that.  The cake was dispersed and the kids were happy and said it tasted really good.  But in all that commotion we never did get around to singing "Happy Birthday"!  Maybe next year?

Professor Plum, Library, Candlestick

A long time ago I went to a mystery dinner and have wanted to host one ever since.  And when I say a long time, I mean years!  So I convinced a couple of my besties to join in and host with me.  Emily helped with the food and Katrina provided the place and awesome decorations!

Now, this wasn't a whodunit supper.  The menu items were all written in code names and the guests had to order everything in advance, not knowing for sure what everything was.  But just in case something went awry, Colonel Mustard and Miss Peacock showed up to help solve any potential mystery cases:)

Katrina had the idea of dividing everyone into teams and have a contest.  The contestants had to build a nativity scene out of graham crackers and other goodies.  So fun!  Here's team 1:

Team 2:

Team 3 (who won the contest):

And team 4:

A closer look at the winning nativity scene.  We all got a laugh out of their HUGE sheep!

Thanks to everyone who made it a fun night.  We had a great time!!

Christmas Break?!?!?!?!

Hard to believe, but tomorrow (which will be "today" in about eight minutes) is my last day of regular class for the semester.  HOW is that possible???  Tomorrow I have two different presentations to do.  Monday and Tuesday are test days, but only one of my three tests is a comprehensive final.  And then break!!  Well, sorta.  I'm taking a minimester which I'm kind of dreading, but I'm doing it for the sake of having my summer completely free (same reason I'm taking 18 hours in the spring sememster) so I think in the long run I will be glad for the minimester.  But it's math.  And I haven't had a math class in about 12 years.  And the last one I had was the lowest level I could get away with.  This class is just a 110 level but it's been so long that I'm a little nervous.  I'm hoping that because it's a minimester the teacher will be easy on us.  If not I guess I'll be living in the math lab over break.

When I think back to August and how my world was kind of turned upside down in a matter of hours...  I don't think I would have really been going against God if I would have decided to say no to the program.  But if I had said no, I probably would still be feeling the same way I was back then- not really knowing where I should be, still trying to find my place.  But in deciding to do the program, I have found that even though it wasn't really my plan, it's right where I need to be.  There's been so many things that have confirmed and reconfirmed that.  Mostly I guess I'm thinking about right after I accepted the spot in the program.... I only had a short time to get registered and get things ready.  And everything, down to the tiniest details fell right into place.  Things that should have caused huge headaches went so smoothly.  When God opened up the doors for school, he opened them up W-I-D-E.  And I believe he has a reason for putting me in there.  I love all my classmates.  If any of them are reading this they'll probably think that's really cheesy, but it's true!

Anyways.  It will be nice to have a little breather.  And just for the sake of posting a picture, here is cousin cookie baking night.  We did it about a month ago but I never posted about it.  When my grandpa was alive, he would have the granddaughters come in sometimes to bake cookies.  Always peanut butter cookies and ranger cookies.  We started talking about it awhile back and decided it was high time we start that up again.  So here we are.  Love them!

Party In Chicago!

This weekend was long awaited!  It was one of my best friend's 30th birthday parties and we surprised her by going to Chicago.  We picked her up Friday after work, got stuck in a huge traffic jam which added 1 1/2 hours to our driving time and finally made it to our hotel downtown.

We quick ran our stuff to our rooms and then went back down to the limo that was waiting for us!  The limo took us to Fogo de Chao, a Brazilian steakhouse.  It was delectable:)  Or as we overheard a kid at the table right next to us, the meat was "succulent".

After we ate we rode around in the limo for awhile, driving down Michigan Avenue and the going to see Navy Pier at night.

Group picture at our hotel after supper.

Saturday was a lazy morning, a little bit of walking around and lunch before going to see Sister Act!  (The sun was not in a good position for picture taking right then)

After the play we had to go back to the hotel to get our luggage and van which was quite the trip.  We were in a hurry to get back for something that night and there was not a taxi to be found anywhere.  Finally we got one and when we arrived at the hotel it was swarming with firetrucks!  Turns out there was no fire, just a burst water pipe, but it did add to the chaos!  A couple of the girls took a picture in front of one of the trucks and the firefighter noticed.  So he opened up the door of the truck and invited us in for a group shot!

We made it back just in time for our plans that night.  Thankfully there were no traffic jams on the way home.  Just a van load of tired girls who had a great weekend.  There were a few people (they know who they are) who took care of almost all of the expenses for the weekend.  Thank you SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!  A splendid weekend indeed.

500!!!!

Yes folks, it's time!  The long awaited 500th post is finally here!!!  And that means it's time for a giveaway!  Now, to some, it may seem a little excessive.  But I'll exlain why.

First, my disclaimer:  I was racking my brain to come up with something that would not only be a fun giveaway, but also in turn benefit a charity some way or another.  I had a few ideas but none that really tickled my fancy.  So a plain ole giveaway it is.

Now the explanation...

1.) I've had this blog for seven years (or maybe eight) and have only done one (1) giveaway.  ONE!  That's all!  And it was very small.  So I decided that this one can make up for the lack thereof.  And possibly make up for the next seven years as well?

2.) I'm already in the Christmas spirit:)  There have been festive and joyous sounds coming from my car for a couple weeks already.

3.) Someone is very generously taking care of my gas expenses while I am in school, which is a TREMENDOUS blessing!  So I guess this is a way to pay it forward.

What's that?  Did somebody mention "gas expenses"?????  Well as it turns out, this will be delightful to those who hate paying for gas!  On the morning of Friday, November 16, I will announce the winner of a

 $$$$$ 50 DOLLAR GAS CARD $$$$$
(Probably either BP or Shell)

You read that right!  Like I said, some may think it's excessive, but just refer to the aforementioned reasons:)

The rules:

1.) All you have to do is comment and let me know you want in the drawing!

2.) I'm putting the link on facebook.  If you comment on FB, that's fine, you'll still get your name in the drawing.  However, if you comment on my actual blog (because everyone with a blog loves comments) you will get your name in the drawing twice!  You don't need to have a blog in order to comment on this one.  Just choose the anonymous option for commenting and don't forget to sign your name!

3.) It is not required that you live close to me.  Even if you live in oh, say, Jamaica, and think you might be coming home for Christmas and will need gas money, you can still comment.

4.) It's okay if you've never commented before.  I won't think any less of you if you only comment for the money;)

With that, comment away!  I'll be back on Friday to announce the winner:)

One More!

Well here we are.... post number 499.  I really am just killing time/procastinating at school so I decided to go ahead and get number 499 on here so I can move right along to 500.  Because if you remember correctly, we are celebrating the 500th post of "Is It Friday Yet?" with a giveaway!  I know, I know- you're so excited you can hardly contain yourselves:)  But trust me- it's worth being excited over.  For those of you on the edge of your seats (which I'm sure there are many, right???) we'll go ahead and move foward.  So without further ado.....

Athens- Finally

I finally had a much anticipated trip to Athens this weekend.  I haven't been there since June so I was pretty excited!  As usual, my picture taking was pretty sporatic and unpredictable, but I did manage to get a few.  Things I did not get a picture of:
Hanging out with Devin on Friday afternoon, carb fest at Mark and Bekah's Friday night in preparation for the next day, stopping by a former student's football game to say hi Saturday afternoon and supper/games with several church families Saturday night.

Things I did get pictures of:

Running (well, I walked half) a 5k Saturday morning.  Two people in our group got first in their age group (not me- I got 11 out of 12 in my group), and one got fastest overall for the 40+ age group!  I had a time in my head that I wanted but I (insert excuses here) and got two minutes longer than that.  So not terrible, but I have a ways to go.  Oh, and for me to place in my age group I would have had to shave 12 minutes off my time.  Probably not gonna happen next time either:)

The race was fun, but afterwards we were sooooo tired.........

Saturday lunch- using napkins as bibs in preparation for a Mexican feast!

Sunday lunch after church.  I was bummed that I forgot to take pictures on Saturday because we did a lot of fun stuff.  So I quick snapped a few pictures of the people sitting closest to me at lunch.

Awww...... the happy couple.

Bummer about the glare in this one- me with 3/4 of the Edelman girls.

Cass, Bekah and Natalie cheesin'.

In a nutshell: GREAT weekend!

Mini Farm

So, not to toot my own horn or anything, but I'm kinda excited about the little project I made.  I made it for an article review I'm doing for school on Farm Therapy and this is my prop:  a mini farm!
My favorite parts are the corn in the chicken pen, the mud in the pig pen and the hay in the horse pen.  I just like it:)  I can't take credit though- found it on pinterest.

Culture In Peoria

Awhile back my Spanish teacher offered us a chance for extra credit.  Turns out there's a real mexican bakery in Peoria!  It's fairly new and she was really excited about it.  In order to get credit we had to show her a receipt and a picture to prove we went and bought something.  It was fun!  It seemed real enough to me- just like the ones in Morelia.  I'll probably go back again at some point.  Word on the street is that they have tamales.  I didn't see any while I was in there but I was too nervous about taking the picture to really notice what all was there.  I felt SO awkward asking to take one!  So I snapped it as quick as I could and called it good enough.  But I love me a tamale so I'll have to go check it out sometime.  Yummy!

By the way, if some of my posts seem lame it's because I'm just so excited about my 500th post giveaway coming up so I'm trying to get there soon.  Only about 4 more posts.  Keep watching!

Kinda Purty

A fall evening rainshower = a double rainbow = beautiful spacious skies o'er amber waves of grain:)

And also a gorgeous sunset (of course with the sillouette of a combine in the background).

*sigh....* I love fall and harvest!

Glory Days Gone By

I'm sure I've mentioned it several times on here, but the long standing joke in my family is that I'm going to be an Olympic gymnast someday.  Well, the other night I had the opportunity to take my 6 year old cousin to her gymnastics class- at the very same studio where I once practiced my skills:)  Her mom told me earlier that the teacher had pictures up of her old students so I went prepared with my camera.  Lo and behold, there in the picture frame labeled "1993" was me!  So for anyone who doubts my abilites or laughs in the face of my Olympic dreams, here you go.  There IS a gymnast inside of me!  Just look at that physique!  Maybe I should drop out of school and start training for Rio 2016???

What an outfit.  And those bangs!  My mom always said I looked like a sheepdog with the bangs in my face like that.  She might have been right.  But an 11 year old girl has to express herself, you know!

Actually, while I was watching the class I found myself thinking "I bet if I practiced I could relearn some of this stuff...."  I mean, I can still pull off a pretty sweet cartwheel.  So if you see me in the near future and I'm sporting an ace bandage, a sling, a cast, crutches or a wheelchair, you  know why!

Meet Haarrrvey

Haarrrv

Last week in class we made puppets!  I kinda like mine:)  We were split up into groups and had to make a puppet show with what we all had created.  Everyone in our group except one made something different than just a regular "person puppet".  So we ended up writing a play where we were all residents in a nursing home attending a costume party.  We also had a princess (who was suffering from severe alzheimer's and thought she was at a Christmas party the whole time), a doctor (who also suffered from dementia and thought he still was the doctor) and a crochety old man dressed as a worm because he liked to fish when he was younger.  Then there was Lula, the activity aide for the evening.  She was extrememly chipper.  Here's Harv's story:

He lost his leg in the war and just a couple months ago his wife (Evelyn) passed away.  She took really good care of him but once she was gone his kids thought he should move into the nursing home because they all lived a couple hours away.  He didn't hate the home but he was still adjusting.  He misses his own home but one perk of the "Old Folks Nursing Home" is the cute nurses!

Good ole Harv.  Just an even-keel guy with the slightest bit of depression, but that's to be expected in his situation.  My favorite part about Haarrrvey's attire is his doo-rag, eyepatch and jingle bell earring:)

I'll spare you all the details of the therapeutic value of puppetry.

Aaaannd Life Goes On

Well the last four weeks have consisted of spending ample time reading these books.  Fun fun!  School has been going really well.  I'm liking all my classes but I kind of forgot that studying outside of class is part of it.  And I'm sooo not in homework mode.  Well, I guess I'm getting there finally.  Last week when the teacher reminded us that there would be a test in two days I was like "Oh no!!  I forgot all about studying!!"  So after cramming for a couple of days all was well and I did good on my test:)  Now, if you notice the book on the bottom- Crafts and Creative Media in Therapy.

I mean, how fun is this class?!?!  We sit and do art projects!  I have a small needlepoint thing that I did too but I forgot to get it out of my bag for the picture.  But really- putting together a journal, yarn projects, personality collage, soda straw painting, oragami.... although what you don't see is the oragami  project that I nearly crumpled into a tiny ball because I was so frustrated with it:)

So school takes up most of my time.  And as of last week I'm back at the elevator for harvest.  Only part time this year (obviously) but still loving it.  Why is weighing trucks so fun anyway?  I've even been spending most of my weekends at home doing homework but last Saturday I met up with Katrina at a park and we caught up on life over a picnic.  It was so fun and quaint:)  And so good to sit and chat with her too.

So that's my life right now.  Nothing too exciting!  I'm coming up on my 500th blog post.  I have a giveaway in mind that I want to do.  I think I need 7 or 8 more posts so I don't know how long it will be but keep your eyes peeled!

Staring Down 30

One week from tomorrow I will turn 30.  Aaauuuugghhhh!!!!!  Shouldn't I be more like, 22?  That's about what I feel like.  But, time slows for nobody and here I am, staring it right in the eye.  Sound dramatic?  Maybe.  I have to admit, when I turned 29 I had a mini freak out session about the fact that 30 was closing in pretty quick and I'm single.  But now I can honestly and whole heartedly say that God has done a huge work in my heart and I'm definitely over the freak out session. He has really helped me focus on the perks and benefits of singleness and I'm really okay! Well, except for the occasional regression into freak out mode.  But let's get off of that tangent.
This weekend was the beginning of my celebrating.  Last summer I ate at a restaurant with my family that really had the best burger I've ever tasted.  Not even kidding.  Everyone else agreed.  Ever since then, I've wanted to go back but the restuarant is two hours away.  So for my birthday, I went there with my friends and we spent the night at a hotel.  So fun!!  Then on the way home the next day we stopped at an outlet mall for some good deals:)  Here we are....

A little chaotic trying to get everyone organized for a group shot

Yay!  There we are!  I love us:)

Sometimes ya just gotta show off your tough side, ya know?

So many memories were made.  I have to share a story which might get a little long, but bear with me.  It was really funny.  So, when we went to check in to the hotel, it was a complete disaster.  There were supposed to be two rooms, but there was one.  And it was booked under the wrong name, the wrong address, and there was no credit card number on record.  We got everything settled but through all that mess I got to be buddies with the guy at the front counter, who was probably in his mid to late 60's.  Anyway, we got up to our rooms and were having quite the time figuring out the lamps in between the two beds.  We tried every different light switch combination we could think of but those lamps would not turn on.  So I called the front desk and the conversation went something like this:

Me:  John!  Hey, it's Sarah up in room 316.  Uh, this is a dumb question, but we can't figure out how to turn the lights on.
John:  Have you turned the knob in between the two lamps?
M: Yeah and it's definitely not working.  (meanwhile, someone suggests making sure it's plugged in and at the very same time he responded...)
J: Well, is it plugged in?
M:  Uh..... now it is!!  Okay, I'm dumb but thanks for your help!!

We were all ready to go to the pool at this point and started to walk out the door when the phone rang.

M: Hello?
J: Sarah?
M: Yeah?
J: Hey, I just wanted to let you know, that tonight when you go to bed, if you want to sleep under the covers, you have to pull them back first.
M: Shut up!

Then I hung up on him.  We laughed and laughed and laughed and the night just kept getting better from that point.  But don't worry, I'll refrain from typing out every story:)

Saturday night after we shopped we had game night at a friend's house.  They host game night every so often and it usually turns into an extreeeeemely late night, but one we always look very forward to.  When I got there, there was a sign on the door!  Their son wanted to make a welcome sign for everyone but then his mom told him it was almost my birthday so he added a happy birthday sign too.  So sweet!

There's still more celebrating to come, too.  At first I felt a little dumb about all the different little parties I'm having but then I decided birthdays only happen once a year and milestones only happen once every ten years so I'm just going to soak it up and enjoy it!

My New Life

Well my new life which now consists of school has been going quite well.  I have one week under my belt now and out of four classes, I think I'm going to like three of them.  The one I'm not really excited about is the history of OT and blah blah blah.  We're already diving in with some research stuff- whoop de dooooo!  Something I've never enjoyed.  My other OT class is Theraputic Media which is a lot about the use of arts and crafts in OT.  So far we've painted, colored, done a personality collage, and a yarn craft thing.  Definitely more up my alley!  Then I have a psycology class which I wasn't super thrilled about having to take, but the professor is reeeeaaaalllly good.  So far anyway.  And that helps tremendously.  She makes me want to be there.  And then there's Spanish.  Fun, but hard.  And since I have three other classes, I can't devote quite as much time to it as I would like but hopefully I at least gain a little ground over the next few months.

Oh- and I'm also teaching Sunday School this year.  3 yr olds.  Yay!  Usually they have mom's do the three year old class but none of them were really available this year.  So my cousin (who is sending her little boy this year) asked me if I wanted to do it and I jumped on it!  I'm pretty excited about that.  It will be good for letting me get my kid fix since it looks like I won't be teaching preschool again any time soon.

Today I made a wonderful/terrible discovery.  I discovered all the goodness of the food carts just a couple blocks down from school!  So fun!  And so tasty!  But so unhealthy:(  And so costing money:(  So the goal is to limit myself- a lot.  But occasionally I WILL be partaking.  It's just like a big city.  Or Mexico.  Take your pick.  There's a Chinese food cart, Mexican, BBQ, and a couple more across the street that I didn't go check out.  And if I'm being honest, it will probably be more than occasionally.

Oh one more thing.  I was going to try and get a picture but......  Something that excites me greatly right now is the fact that my dad's combine is sitting out in the yard, getting ready for harvest!  Even though harvest will be pretty dismal and depressing this year, I still can't help but be excited for it.  Yay!

My mom just called me.  On the phone.  I'm upstairs.  She's downstairs.  Oh boy....

I Moustache You A Question....

My cousin's husband turned 30 and she threw a surprise party for him.... with a moustache theme!  Partly because it was just a funny theme and partly because he secretly wants a big moustache:)  We had lots of fun sporting our face decorations!

My mom and dad

There was also a photobooth to capture memories of the night.

Just a fun time!

Coolest. Thing. Ever.

Last night I went to an outdoor concert at a friend's house.  Somehow she heard this guy sing somewhere and liked his stuff.  He does house concerts so she put her name on the list about two years ago.  A few months ago he sent out an email saying he would be in the area and would she still be interested in hosting a concert?  So she said of course!  And it was awesome.  The night was beautiful, the music was great and the company was good, too.  The picture is dark but you get the idea of the setting we had.  A-maze-ing.

I had gotten there early because a) I wanted to be a good friend and help get set up and b)it was kind of like having a backstage pass!  Although since he does these house concerts, pretty much everybody has a backstage pass because he just hangs out with everyone who's there.  By the time the night was over I was a groupie and got a picture with him before I left:)  He was pretty cool!

And here's the hostess with the mostest!

This was one of my favorite songs of the whole night.  It's basically about spending our money on things that matter rather than things we don't need since it's not really ours in the first place.  The story line is a person going into the store but putting their money back in their pocket.  They eventually send it to where it will go toward orphan care.  Such a great night!

Life Changes

Well my week certainly did not go as planned.  A couple weeks ago I told my boss that I would be quitting my job within the next month.  I didn't know for sure when- probably around the end of August.  I was going to work full time at the elevator through harvest again and then after that?  I didn't know where I would end up.  I was going to look for jobs here in Illinois and also back in Alabama.  I was reeeaalllly excited about the thought of moving back to Alabama.
Now, if you may remember, I had applied to the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at my local community college for the second time back in January.  And for the second time, I didn't get in.  But I was really okay with that.  I had completely moved on from it and was very much so looking forward to whatever else might happen (hoping it had something to do with living in the south).  So imgaine my surprise Monday morning when my phone rang and I heard the voice on the other end say "Hi, this is so and so from the ICC Health Careers Department and you've been accepted into the OTA program!"  Uhhhhh...... WHAT?!?!?!?!?  I was completely unprepared to hear that.  She kept going on and on about how exciting this was and congratulations and stuff.  But all I could think of was that MY plans were all of a sudden coming to a screeching halt and MY life was doing a 180 and I was NOT ready for that!  So I spent the day being extremely overdramatic/crying/playing poor me.  But God.  He ever so kindly reminded me that this is a great opportunity and MY plans maybe weren't what he deemed as best for me.  I don't know the reason behind all the inconvenient timing, but he has also helped me get pretty excited about this new path.  I'm not really thrilled about becoming a poor college student as I enter my thirties, but here I am.  And I absolutely know that God will provide.  And to top it off?  I still get to work at the elevator.  Only part time, but still enough to make me happy:)
The next two weeks will be kind of a whirlwind, trying to fit in all my different things to get done for the program and finishing up at work, but here we go!

Random

Random #1

Earlier this week I had a great responsibility.  I was elected to babysit my niece's cat, Bella.  Now, generally I'm not a huge cat fan.  But Bella is still in her cute little kitty stage so all was well.  There was one night though where she escaped to her hiding spot underneath a giant pine tree.  I spent about five minutes on my knees saying "heeeeerreeee kitty kitty kitty" until I thought to bring her food bowl over to the place she was hiding.  Sure enough, she couldn't resist and within about 20 seconds I had her safely back in my hands.  I think I'll be re-elected for the job again in a few weeks when they go visit family in Michigan.  I gotta admit, she is kinda cute...

Random #2

Tuesday night I got home from work to find my dad taking a nap.  In the kitchen.  The carpet had gotten a good shampoo that morning so everything was misplaced.  It was funny though to see him sleeping there:)

Have a great day!

The Bruise

Out in Denver, my cousin decided to punch me one night.  Hard.  Out of the blue.  Just for the fun of it.  I guess he was reverting back to the days of being a pesky younger brother?  Not really sure.  But it hurt.

At first I was a little dissapointed at how little of a battle wound I had from the incident.  Just a very light bruse.

But things progressed nicely.

Pretty soon it was big and ugly and everyone was asking about it.  I even had a client who was concerned I was in an abusive relationship and wondered if she should call a hotline for me.

It's healing slowly, but over two weeks later, I still have a good story to tell!
